The City of Boston collects some bulky items, but the rules are tighter than most people expect. Mattresses and box springs are picked up only by appointment, only for buildings with six units or fewer, and with a yearly limit per household. Televisions, air conditioners, refrigerators and other appliances need a separate request through 311. Details are on the city's special collection page and mattress recycling page.
For one item, that system works. For a full apartment, a basement of mixed junk, renovation debris or a building with more than six units, it doesn't. That's when a crew is the faster route: one visit, any amount, no appointments to stack up.
Where in Boston do we work?
We cover the whole city, from Charlestown and East Boston to Dorchester, South Boston, Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, West Roxbury, Hyde Park, Brighton and Allston. Coming from Malden, the northern and eastern neighborhoods are the closest, but every part of Boston is in our service area.
Much of the work here happens in triple-deckers, brick row houses and condo buildings, where the challenge is getting things down the stairs and out to a truck parked on a busy street. Around September 1, when a large share of Boston leases turn over at once, demand for move-out help peaks across the city, so call early if your move falls near that date.
Condo and apartment buildings
Many Boston condo and apartment buildings ask haulers to book the elevator or loading area ahead of time and to show proof of insurance. Check with your management office before the job date and tell us what they require when you book.
Parking and access
A lot of Boston streets are resident-permit parking, and many homes have no driveway. If you can hold a space near the door, or there's a back alley or side yard we can use, mention it. A shorter carry means a faster job.

Why do Boston residents call WA?
- Stairs and tight spaces are part of the job. Walk-ups, basements and narrow halls don't change the plan.
- Price before work. You decide with the number in hand.
- Tear-out and haul-away together. Renovation debris leaves with the same crew that took it down.
- Fully insured for work in homes, condos and commercial spaces.

The city collects a limited number of bulky items, and mattresses and appliances need an appointment. A private crew isn't free, but it takes everything in one visit, from any floor, without item limits.

In Boston, WA picks up furniture, household junk, cleanout loads and renovation debris in every neighborhood. Call (781) 957-5327 any hour Monday through Saturday.
Does junk removal take mattresses?
Mattresses must be recycled in Massachusetts. Boston collects them by appointment for buildings with six units or fewer. Ask us about your building and we'll explain your options.
